What Council does:

  • responds to reports of surface flooding on roads or pavements due to blocked drains or gratings

  • maintains waterways, catchments and stormwater reserves – remember these are designed to flood so your property doesn’t

  • arranges for council contractors to attend to flooding events – when a report is made, the contractors will inspect the affected area to determine priority and cause of flooding, and they will action it accordingly

The Council responds to flooding emergencies as soon as we can.  However, when problems are widespread Council may not be able to meet your needs immediately in an emergency.  There are also things that you can do to be prepared for heavy rain.

What you can do:

  • keep your roof gutters clean, in good order and ensure property and surrounds are clear of any loose material that can cause blockages.  It is important to have your drain pipes checked on a regular basis to ensure they function efficiently

  • if you are concerned that your property has flooded in the past, consider keeping a supply of sandbags for your personal use.  These are usually available from builders, DIY stores, by looking in the Yellow pages

  • if your internal or private drains are overflowing, this is the responsibility of the homeowner and you will need a private drainage contractor in the first instance to deal with any blockage.
