Resource RevoveryThe resource recovery park at Te Maunga in Truman Lane, Mt Maunganui, accepts a range of resources such as concrete, demolition materials, solvents, household recyclable materials and green-waste for recycling and reuse. Access is via the transfer station which also processes waste for transport to landfill. 

Existing viable businesses involved in recycling or recovering resources from the waste stream have relocated to the park. .

Businesses operating currently at the resource recovery park are:

  • recycling drop off centre: free recycling for some materials. See Transfer Stations
  • composting : green-waste made into certified organic compost
  • solvent recovery / distillation : solvents distilled to a reusable product
  • kerbside recycling collection processing: materials baled and exported for processing into new materials
  • construction demolition separation for materials reuse
  • concrete collection for crushing and reuse in construction
  • waste oil collected to be used as a fuel

Reuse of materials

Second hand goods reuse is provided for in Tauranga by second hand stores.  Search in the Yellow Pages under Second Hand.

Funky JunkFunky Junk Depot, Historic Village, 17th Avenue, Tauranga

Our aim - to provide an extensive range of recycled materials collected from industry and the community for use in creative projects or for School resources.

The Depot is a joint effort between the Tauranga Environment Centre Charitable Trust (admin), Turning Point Trust (day-to-day management), and Tauranga City Council provide the building.

The Funky Junk depot is open to the public Wednesday and Friday mornings, 9am - 12pm.  The Centre is situated at the Historic Village, Hut 35 on the back street.

How membership of the Funky Junk Depot works:

2011 – 2012 Membership fee

  • Annual membership fee -  $20 individual / family, $50 school / early childhood centre / community group

Membership Renewals will be sent out  One Year after you send in your Membership Form.

Entry to the Depot is by a coded number dial.  The code changes each year on October 1st.  You will be given the new code when you renew your membership each year.  As the Depot is not staffed on a regular basis the keypad means that you can visit the Depot whenever you want.  We are hoping that this will make visiting the Depot more convenient for members.

Members can take away as much treasure as they want.  Donations are gratefully accepted from members and non-members.  We do not take in electronic equipment or polystyrene.

To become a Funky Junk Member:

You can pick up a membership form from the Tauranga Environment Centre or simply visit us at the Centre. Payments can be made with a cheque payable to the Tauranga Environment Centre, PO Box 487, Tauranga or electronically to:  02-0432-0002747-00 (please include your surname or school/group name as the reference).
