Local Success Stories
Bayfair Shopping Centre
In 2006 Bayfair were sending 389 tonnes to landfill a year at a cost of $60,000. By the end of 2007, Bayfair had reduced their waste by 42 tonnes a year and saved $30,000. This has been implemented by ‘public place’ recycling in the food court, diversion of food scraps from landfill and recycling facilities available to all tenants of the shopping centre. Bayfair’s media tracking company estimates that sustainability initiatives at the shopping mall have resulted in $450,000 worth of free advertising through print, radio and television media over the last 12 months.
See the Bayfair website for more information.
Devan Plastics
After contacting Tauranga City Council in 2005, Devan Plastics sought to minimise their waste by recycling all of its office waste. It stopped using single use products like polystyrene cups and contacted their supplier to request new recyclable packaging for the plastic powder that was shipped in 20kg sacks. They also now recycle all toner cartridges, obsolete computers, plastic from factory off-cuts and shrink-wrap saving $8000 per year and reducing waste to landfill by 65%.
