What is a Transfer Station?
- A place to take your rubbish and recycling.
- More commonly known as a "Tip" or "Rubbish Dump".
- Transfer Stations process materials for Reuse, Recycling, Recovery or Disposal.
The Transfer Stations are leased & operated by Envirowaste. Questions about prices/fees should be directed to 07 574 9707.

What hours are the transfer stations open?
- 7.30am to 5.00pm Monday to Friday
- 9.00am to 5.00pm weekends and Public Holidays
- Closed on Christmas Day, New Year's Day and Good Friday
General waste is accepted at a charge for disposal to landfill.
The Transfer Stations do not accept hazardous waste , medical waste or liquid wastes.
Recycling centres at the Transfer station
Some recyclable materials can be taken free of charge to the recycling centres at the transfer stations. Some recyclables have a fee that is lower than landfill fees.
Free recyclables include;
- paper (newspaper, magazines, office paper, junk mail, envelopes)
- cardboard
- aluminium and steel cans
- glass bottles and jars – no window glass or light bulbs
- plastic bottles (soft drink , milk bottles , Janitorial bottles )
- ovens, dishwashers, microwaves, washing machines and clothes dryers only are accepted
- other ferrous and non ferrous metals
- car batteries
- Ni-cam batteries (used in cordless power tools, laptop computers, shavers, motorised toys, personal stereos, hearing aids)
- clothing and textiles – shoes and scraps of materials not accepted
Some materials are accepted for recycling free of charge if taken separately without waste, but must be dropped off at waste pit area. These items are:
- waste oil (5 x 4 litre packs - up to 20 litres max) is collected at the waste pit not the recycling centre. For larger quantities or commercial operations contact Transpacific Technical services 0800 425 536 or Waste Petroleum Combustion Ltd (09) 238 1268.
- e waste (computers and anything that plugs into a computer). Computer recyclers collect e waste for recycling and reuse www.computerrecyclers.co.nz for more information on what is accepted.

NB: If these recyclables are part of a load containing waste, the whole load will be charged as waste.
Some materials are accepted for recycling but incur a fee. See the prices for these in the table below. These include:
- fridges and freezers – degassed and reused for scrap metal
- car tyres – processed and made into fuel
- concrete only loads – crushed and reused as aggregate
- car bodies – reused for scrap metal
- paint – household quantities can be dropped off for reuse but will be charged at the same rate as rubbish. Other options for paint are Resene’s paintwise scheme

Green-waste
- Complete loads only are accepted. No combined loads of green-waste and rubbish.
- Please stop at the Recycling Centre to be assessed for a green-waste approved card. This is to be used at the gatehouse.
- No flax, bamboo, pampas, flowering gorse, palm trees and cabbage trees will be accepted. If in doubt, ask Recycling staff or ring Maleme Street Recycling on 541 1903 or Te Maunga Recycling on 574 8079.
- Maximum diameter 100 mm (4 inches)
- Maximum lengths 3 m (10 feet)
- Green-waste is recycled and made into a certified organic compost at the Te Maunga compost site.
