Currently, residual waste from Tauranga City Council and Western Bay of Plenty District Council areas is disposed of at consented landfills in the Waikato region. These Landfills are constructed and operated to international standards of environmental protection by containment and treatment of contaminants, harnessing harmful gases to generate electricity and regular monitoring of the surrounding environment. Despite all these safeguards, land-filling is a least preferred option in dealing with our waste.
Council does own a landfill site at Mathers Road which is not currently used. The site is a strategic asset for the future and will be used when Tauranga needs its own landfill.
Closed Tips at Cambridge Road in Tauranga and Truman Road at Mount Maunganui are managed under an environmental aftercare programme. This involves mitigation of effects and biochemical surveillance of the sites to ensure protection of the environment.
