Hazardous Waste has the potential to harm people's health and the environment. It includes substances that are flammable, corrosive, chemically reactive, toxic, eco-toxic or radioactive. Tauranga City Council aims to remove these materials from the waste stream for appropriate disposal or recycling to reduce the potential environmental harm they may cause.
More information about Hazardous Substances
Hazardous Waste Collection
This is an annual event held at the Maleme Street Transfer Station for the disposal of household hazardous waste. It is generally held in March each year. See here (334kb pdf) for a brochure for more information.
NB: Eco-bulbs and fluorescent tubes are accepted at HazMobile Events.
Council will accept small quantities of selected hazardous waste from households free at Transfer Stations (solvents, household cleaners, garden chemicals) throughout the year. This is by prior arrangement only, please phone Tauranga City Council Call Centre (07) 577 7000.
Hazardous Waste from Commercial Businesses
Council does not accept hazardous waste from businesses. Tauranga City Council encourages private sector manufacturers and suppliers of potentially hazardous materials to accept their own responsibility for the handling and disposal of hazardous materials. This includes farms and orchards. Businesses wishing to dispose of hazardous waste should contact one of the following contractors:
- Transpacific Technical Services - ph 09 274 7963
- Envirowaste Technical Services - ph 09 636 0350
- R & S Mc Gregor - ph 027 4751 134
