Summer in Tauranga

During summer thousands of visitors come to Tauranga to enjoy the beach and everything else our region has to offer.

Mount Maunganui gets particularly busy over the summer and especially on New Year’s Eve, when thousands of people head for the Mount Main Beach. Each year Tauranga City Council provides entertainment at Mount Maunganui on New Year’s Eve including a spectacular fireworks display. Fireworks are also let off on the Tauranga side of the bridge.

On New Year’s Eve roads in the Mount peninsula are closed to vehicle traffic. More information about this will be available closer to the time.

There are permanent liquor-free zones in various parts of Tauranga. In the summer the liquor-free zone in Mount Maunganui is widened to include the whole peninsula, and a temporary liquor-free zone is introduced in Papamoa.

If you’re planning to head to Tauranga for your summer, make sure you grab a summer passport from a visitor information centre or summer ambassador when you get here. These handy little booklets are distributed every December and contain lots of info on events, liquor-free zone maps and NYE bus timetables

Summer Ambassadors

The summer ambassador programme is run annually from December-January. Summer ambassadors distribute information to visitors and locals alike and are a great source of information in the summer months.

Recruitment for summer ambassadors generally starts in October-November. Please check back later in the year for recruitment information.
