This community-led project began in 2005. The intention was to create New Zealand’s first artificial surfing reef, capable of producing quality surfing waves while at the same time enhancing the coastal environment.
The Mount Reef Trust was formed to lead the project and a number of organisations and individuals supported a fundraising campaign. Construction of the reef began in late 2005 but was hampered by problems caused by difficult weather conditions and the materials being used.
Budget constraints meant the project was never fully completed, although discussions between the Trust and reef designers Amalgamates Solutions and Research (ASR) on how best to finish the project are still taking place.
