Council Archives hold all historical Council related records.   In addition records from the previous Tauranga City and Mount Borough Authorities and the Papamoa Beach Community Council are kept within the Archive section.   These records pre-date the Local Body Amalgamation, which took place in 1989.   Council Archives do not contain records of local societies and organisations or community type records.   In some instances these may be found in the Local History section of the Tauranga Library. Some Archival material is held on site, however the majority is stored offsite with OnLine Security.

The archives also contain Minute Books going back to 1888 for the previous authorities now within the Tauranga City Council boundaries.   The index to early Tauranga City Minute Books can be viewed in the New Zealand Room - Local History section of the Tauranga Library.   If you wish to view specific minutes you must make your request through the Democracy Section of Council.

If you wish to view other material contained within Council Archives you must make a request specific to the Local Government Official Information and Meetings Act.   These requests can be made through Council’s Legal Officer.   There may be limits on access to original papers to protect documents or for confidentiality reasons.   There may also be charges incurred, dependant upon the type and amount of information required.
