The name Tauranga means safe anchor or resting place. Te Awanui, meaning 'big tributary', is the original name of the harbour.

History, legends and local Iwi

There are three main Iwi living in the Tauranga Moana rohe - Ngati Ranginui, Ngatiterangi and Ngati Pukenga.

Tauranga has a long history of both Maori and European settlement. The most famous legend for this area is that of how Mauao got its name.

Tangata Whenua / Maori links with Council

The Tauranga Moana Tangata Whenua Collective is an autonomous body made up of representatives from each of the hapu and iwi in the Tauranga City Council area.

The Kaumatua Forum provides an opportunity for Kuia and Koroua of Tauranga Moana to raise issues and concerns with the Mayor, Chief Executive and staff.
